Heather Kent Art { I Heart Art }

I'm excited to introduce y'all to Heather this week. I received one of her beautiful necklaces as a gift from Alison last year. Since then I have connected with her on IG and I adore her unique work.

I hope you will enjoy reading about Heather and her work and use the code PENANDPAINT15 for 15% off your order!

1. When did you first begin creating art?
I have been drawing and painting for as long as I can remember. From our dining room table, my mom used to teach art classes to the neighborhood kids. This is where I first started painting with watercolors, and is probably why it remains one of my favorite mediums.

2. What is your favorite/most sentimental creation you have made? Why?
Though my favorite medium is watercolor, and my favorite things to create are my Original Hand Painted Necklaces, a few creations that will always be special to me are 3 Acrylic paintings I did a few years ago. My friend returned from a Missions trip to Uganda, and several of her photos inspired me to paint them. I painted a series of Ugandan Children, and quickly sold all three paintings. I hope to someday add to the series. I attached a photo of 2 of the paintings in their new home, along with the 3rd Ugandan Boy.

3. Is there a project you've always dreamed of creating? What would it be?
Quite a few. One project that is on the top of my list is a large painting that is composed of tiny 1 inch paintings to make a huge, beautiful, colorful collage. I love painting tiny! I have a feeling this project will take quite a while - stay tuned!

1. When did you first begin creating art?
I was always drawing and painting as a kid--I couldn't get enough of it! Both of my daughters are already prolific artists (at ages three and four!) and it makes me smile to see myself in them. I like to think that I must have been doing the very same things when I was their age--waking up early in the morning and even sometimes late at night with the urge to draw or cut and glue things together.

I continued drawing throughout school and started painting a little in college as an art major. But it was at that point that I began to feel my childlike creativity fading--it felt like I was supposed to be "growing up" and learning a "practical" career. I ended up with English and Education degrees (although I'm still happy about that--literature is an important part of my story). But I kind of forgot about art for a while.

I started dabbling in paint again after grad school to ease the stress of teaching. A few years later, we found out that my first daughter was on the way and it was like the child in my belly awoke the child in my heart--my creativity skyrocketed! I was suddenly focused on my work, improving in my skill and making a new painting every week. Of course, my productivity slowed once my daughter was born and her sister followed just a year later, but my passion and excitement for art has only grown in the years since.

2. What is your favorite/most sentimental creation you have made? Why?
I like to say that my daughters taught me the art of "loving a thing to pieces." It's ok for some of the things that are precious and sacred in life to be well-worn and even falling apart--rather than preserved, sitting high on a shelf. This idea has transformed my art and I love what I do more than ever! There are seasons in life that require quiet delicacy and careful precision, and there are seasons in life that invite us to jump in the puddles and dig deep in the dirt. I combine patchwork collage with delicate watercolor and line drawings, exploring this balance between messy and sweet. As my artwork is born within the challenges of life, it teaches me that sometimes it's the messy times that actually turn out to be the sweetest times too.

My "Denim and Dirt" winged heart is my favorite representation of these ideas.

3. Is there a project you've always dreamed of creating?
What would it be?
Ever since I was little I wanted to write and illustrate a children's book. And I'm beginning to think that I may actually do it! :)

a few things on Friday 2.15.13

1. First things first. I have new prints! This one, that one, then there is that one and I loved the flowers so much I made this one. Oh and then there are these new note cards.

2. You can take 20% off your order with the code HEART. That's $14 for an 8x10 which is pretty great :) If you aren't familiar with where to enter the code when you go to checkout there is a blue link above your total that says "apply discount code" and you click it and enter your code and apply. The coupon code is good through today 2/15!

3. I got these portraits made for Mr. Pen & Paint for Valentine's Day from this shop. I squealed when I saw them. Our portrait wall is growing. So far we have those, one by my friend Shannon, one from Hsqrd Creative, and one in the works from Amore Amuse. I'm on the lookout for another artist who will make one once we are a family of five. Do you have any suggestions?

4. Mama got a brand new bag. I've been needing a new purse and the other day I found this when I was running errands. I like it so much and the color is perfect for spring.

5. It has been rainy/overcast since Sunday night. Today is the first day of lots of sunshine. I'm so thankful. The boys and I were going stir crazy.

6. These are my new daily routines. But if you know me well, I'm only good with eating the chocolate. Hehehe. In all seriousness, I really liked the Pilates video. It was a little harder than I expected and not cheesy. I have another video that I'm not sure I can deal with for the next 9 months. I really want to workout regularly this pregnancy. Wish me luck.

7. Have you heard of 40 Bags in 40 Days? It's along the lines of the book I'm reading so I'm interested to see what it all includes. I wish I could just get Ann Marie to come do it for me :) I'll pay in artwork.

Happy Friday y'all!

Little Light Prints { I Heart Art }

Today I would like for y'all to meet Carly from Little Light Prints. The first time I came across Carly's work it was from this print she created, and I fell in love. Carly and I have connected through email and social media and we found out we not only share art in common but both our little boys have heart defects. It's good to be able to connect with another mama with things like this.

I hope you will enjoy meeting Carly and take advantage of the coupon code she is offering - Use TAKE25 for 25% off your order in her Etsy Shop!

Ampersand by Little Light Prints (I just bought this one!)
1. When did you first begin creating art?
In 2010, I was a new mom and felt like a needed a hobby. It's safe to say, out of desperation of needing something that was my own, Little Light Prints was started. When I first opened the shop, I was purchasing other people's digital art to use in my designs. It wasn't until early 2011 that I became comfortable with the program I was using and started to create designs that were completely my own.

2. What is your favorite/most sentimental creation you have made? Why?
My favorite design is a very simple one but one I'm very attached to and that is the Proverbs 31:25, which I call the Daisy Print.

Proverbs 31.25 by Little Light Prints
Daisy Love Merrick (www.prayfordaisy.com) is an 8 year old beauty who is battling cancer for the 3rd time in 3 years. Her and her family are very dear to our church body. The print was created as my way of contributing to the massive $500,000 her family needed to raise in order to receive experimental treatment in Israel (a goal that has been met & profits are no longer going to her trust). To me, Daisy is the face of that verse. I feel like it was written thousands of years ago with her in mind and I get teary every time I see it.

3. Is there a project you've always dreamed of creating?
What would it be?
There are so many projects I'd love to do and I'd be lying if I didn't say I'm terrified of venturing out and expanding my product line. I really just want to see my designs in people's homes. It makes all the time I spend on this shop totally worth it.

a few things on Friday 2.8.13

1. We have an addition joining our family! Baby #3 should be arriving in the late summer.

2. Charlie has declared the baby's name is going to be "Bubbles". When asked why he said it's because he loves blowing bubbles. Okay then.

3. I have already been asked if we will find out Baby #3's gender. We will. This mama needs to know if we will need to buy lots of pink or if we can use all boys' baby clothes.

4. Have you heard of this? Mr. Pen & Paint subscribes, and he shares happy news with me every week. It's a good way to stay encouraged about what's going on in the world.

5. Also, Mr. Pen & Paint (who is a middle school teacher) has started a People are Awesome Project. Every day he shares videos or stories with his students to remind them there are people in the world doing awesome things. He shared this video with them, and I thought it was cute.

6. I usually only wear my engagement/wedding rings and a ring that was my mama's, but every time I see these I get googly eyes.

7. Encourage someone today. Actually every day. When you encourage someone you never know how far it goes. I'll keep reminding you because it reminds me.

a few things on Friday 2.1.13

1. Oh hey, it's February. That was fast.

2. I did it. I got my hair chopped. It's been about 3 years since I've had it this short. I swore I wouldn't cut it again after it took so long to grow out, but over the past two weeks it's been driving me crazy. My hair dresser cut off over 9 inches. That's a lot of hair. And I love it. And Mr. Pen & Paint loves it. He told me I looked hotter and younger and well, I mean what more can a wife want to hear?

3. There have been a lot of things going on for me in the past couple of weeks - professionally and personally. Some are wonderful, some are challenges. On Tuesday I had a good reminder while I was reading this (January 29th). All is well. All IS well.

4. If you haven't ever read this post, please read it. Every week I'm fighting a battle to protect my art. It's very exhausting at times. I will remain positive, but when people do things that break copyright laws with artwork (mine or any other artists') I get very upset. I'm going to be putting a post together with resources for artists soon. If you are an artists/photographer/sewist/whatever you create, please protect your work and be kind with the work of others.

5. I have thoughts turning for a Valentine printable for y'all. I've just got to get it on paper.

6. I have now started this audio book. My kitchen counters have been un-stuffed and clean for over a week. And y'all it is AMAZING. I still have to get to other parts of our home but it's been wonderful to get organized.

7. I'm making something fun with stuff from this shop. I have been working on it in spurts when I have a bit of free time.

Happy Friday!
